19 South

The population living in Athens consistently brags about how the town has one of the best "music scenes" around. At first I wasn't quite sure if I believed this, being that Athens is very small. I figured that a larger city would have a lot more music to offer, but Athens is indeed a great place to experience many diverse artists. Music venues in Athens are not by any means scarce. There are a wide variety of bars, coffee shops, and even basements to choose from. No matter if you want to entertain your audience with some hip hop beats, serenade them with a smooth Latin beat, or melt their faces off while jamming on the Djembe, Athens is a great place to start up a band. Or for someone like me, Athens is a great place to listen to many different, very talented, young musicians with unique personalities and bands with spankin' new flare.

Photographs: All of these photographs were taken at 19 South, a location uptown in Athens where many budding musicians play. Among my favorites are the Jazz Cream Assassins. The first photograph was taken at "Jam Session", held on Monday nights. The second photograph is of my friend, Josh, who plays with Five Foot Forward. Photographs I have taken of Five Foot Forward are featured in their 19 South 9/5/08 album. Finally, the last picture features the hands of guitar player, Dan Perez, of Elemental Groove Theory.
